The Hate in Haiti

These ladies are from afghanistan. I hate to keep writing about Haiti, but I must. They are also oppressed, but by belief. It is not that our beliefs are better, they're just different.
Notice the Canadian or American soldier in Kabul, which I have been to.
Now it's on to the quake and the NBA. Above is where in the world earthquakes have struck. Below is A TALL GUY scoring a basket in the NBA. Dare I say it's a Canadian game? Why wouldn't a bunch of seven-footers be able to dunk a basketballs?

Hello, Haiti should becalled Hate-ee.

No reason to be sorry about talking (writing) about Haiti — it is the topic de jour of the moment in all forms of media. Well, the Enquirer is more interested in Tiger's conquests/addictions, but... :)

I just wonder if Haiti will still be a news topic in six months: Will news organizations still send reporters? Will the public still care?

I think WE (the world) needs to still care and pay attention and make sure all the money being raised is going to the right people, and the rebuilding of the cities/country is being done right.

I think Haiti needs to be on the public radar like Afghanistan is for a long time. We need to make sure things get better and they don't return to their old ways — without forcing our ways on them of course.

One of the things that drives me CRAZY about the news media is its decision to jump all over issues with blanket coverage for a few weeks, and then they abandon the issue for the next hot topic. Life is a slow journey and change doesn't happen overnight (sometimes I wish it did though because then I could be on my way to Bali or Australia or China or Italy tomorrow — ha ha).

    Back to the main topic...

Blanket coverage just over saturates the market and people grow bored, plus most, not all, of the stories are lacking in depth and real research.

(I didn't get "sappy" this time.)

  2. Anon: The World of Journalism cares about what has happened in Haiti because it's a close by vacation spot to us and there are thousands of Canadians there.

It will be out of the news -- again -- soon because that's the way the news cycle works.

Haiti will NOT be on the public radar because the nexy two-headed man won't let it and our political leaders don't care unless the voting public cares. And the public two months from now, won't.

That's sad though. How do you make the public care about real stuff? Sometimes I think I'm getting too jaded about life and the world. Well, except when there are innocent babies around... :)

  4. Anon: The media doesn't care. It reports as long as the paying customer cares. Then it moves on to Arnod Schwartzenegger's belly button.

Do you think the world will get together to fundraise for millions of dollars if Arnie's belly-button was in danger of falling off?

(Disclaimer: I meant this as sarcasm. My sense of humour is sometimes twisted, and people have been known to get the wrong idea.)

Wouldn't it be newsworthy in six months to learn where all of the money for Haiti was used?

  6. Anon: No, people will stop feeling guilty and at income tax time, they'll rememer giving $$ and they'll ask why.

You seem to have an "insider" view of the inner workings of the media — Me? I'm just starting out, looking for a big scoop to put me on the map (when I saw the movie All the Presidents Men is when I knew I wanted to be a journalist).

I have a wanderlust though, so I don't want to get stuck in one spot — a job where I could spend a few weeks in Haiti, then move to Europe and then off the Africa, New York or China or wherever would be ideal.

    Nice chatting with you.

  8. It is terrible what is happening in Haiti. And it's tragically sad that for a country that's had a long history of surviving the odds, they could never overcome the corruption that has plagued its leadership and gov't for years, keeping them from becoming self sufficient.

And the sad truth is, there are many problems the world over. And while we can't come together at this time to solve them all, we could at least try to solve this one crisis.

And though the media coverage may almost be overwhelming at times, I do think it brings much needed attention to the crisis. For now, at least it's motivating people and nations to act.

  9. Anon: I wasworking in the media for years. I don't try to hide that.

I didn't mean to imply you were hiding anything. I was just making an observation. Are you a basketball fan?

OK. You had some basketball shots mixed in with the Haiti ones, so I assumed you probably were. I like basketball, not so much professional, but the college level is always good. Predicting the NCAA March Madness is always fun, but I don't recommend wagering on it, especially since I love underdogs. :)

I'm pretty much into most sports — I'm even learning about Indy and NASCAR lately, which I never thought I'd be interested. Well, to tell the truth, it's more fun talking with the drivers and discovering what makes them so passionate, then it is watching a bunch of cars drive in a circle repeatedly.

I like the emotions of sports and the fact that they allow you to forget the problems of the world — Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti — for a little while. Plus, the drive and skill of some to the athletes is amazing.

  12. Anon: what's so great about being 7 ft. tall? Then you can be in the NBA if you want to and earn millions.

Basketball -- or at least professional basketball -- is like life's three-ring circus. You don't HAVE to be tall, but it sure helps.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anonymous9:21 a.m.

Well, if you're 7-feet tall, you can change a light bulb without a ladder... Or paint the ceiling without one.

Of course, you'd have to make sure you don't bump your head on the wet paint. Personally someone who is that tall gives ME a pain in the neck from always looking up. :)

  14. Anon:

But they're NOT just changing light bulbs, they're making millions playing a tall kids' game.

If they were all small shooting guards, it would be something. But they're not.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anonymous2:24 p.m.

But the smaller players in basketball are more impressive, watching them zip and zag through the "giants" is always fun — believe me a team of small players can beat a team that is taller then they are on average. It's the shooting that matter — any team that has one or more 3-point shooters (whether it women or men) can change the course of the game.

Plus, money isn't everything... I don't think I'd ever want to have millions — just enough to pay my debts, my family's debts and set my parents up in a nice retirement condo or something.

  18. Once again, Chris, it's great to see you blogging. I have been watching some of the stuff on Haiti and it is very sad indeed. I do like that groups such as Doctors Without Borders have so thoroughly stepped up to the plate.

I also saw that John Travolta flew his 707 into Haiti with supplies, though I hope that wasn't a publicity stunt (though he seems to get enough without doing things like that).

Anyway, keep on keepin' on, WW, it's great to see your words again.

    Big hugs,
    Laurie

  20. It's a little baffling that our Governments don't put this sort of effort into rescuing their own citizens.

In Canada, one million children, or almost 1 child in 6, still live in poverty.
In America, 18 percent of the 74 million children 17 and younger, are living in poverty.
Of these, 46% of African American children and 40% of Latino children live in poverty!

Most Americans (58.5%) will spend at least one year below the poverty line at some point between ages 25 and 75.

    Just sayin.
