Playlists on a Winter Night...

MUSIC LAUNCHES ME INTO ORBIT AND BEYOND.

IT MOVES ME TO DO SILLY THINGS AND TO FEEL GOOD DOING THEM.

OK, maybe music doesn't exactly equal life, but it surely enhances it unlike anything else. If you let it, it flows through every part of your existence. It's like a best friend or lover that's always there.

You can tap on whatever part of its wide-ranging personality or moods you want, at any time, and with one click or press of a button you can hear it speak to you about whatever you desire.

It can tease your ears and brain and plays on your own mood, brightening your day or enriching or magnifying whatever you're feeling into a sensual arousal of the brain that revives memories or whatever you wish.

Music makes me think. And feel. It helps to put me into a rythym and in tune with my thoughts.

I was going to take pix last night of a considerable snowfall here in the Great White North, on a relatively mild night.

But I got busy with blogging and driving my son to his band practice and back and never got around to it.

Nonetheless, I had music playing all night. And here was my playlist.

  1. Too many to list!

But I WILL tell you what I've been singing to myself for the past two days...

    Christine McVie's (Fleetwood Mac's) "Songbird."

Thankfully it has taken the place of the omnipresent "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow which has been stuck in my head for years and I have to listen to everyday. It's a curse.

  2. Songbird on YouTube for anyone who's interested.

    *gets teary-eyed listening*

  3. MJ:

It's a great song. I've posted it on my site from YouTube, for you, and will do so for anyone else.

Thank God you didn't say Copacabana...

  4. Oh geez, you posted the video!

*weeps openly to the point of mascara running down face and starting to resemble Tammy Faye Bakker*

*starts singing "Stop Your Sobbing" by The Pretenders*

  5. MJ:

Please, no! Not Tammy Faye! Now I suppose you want me to post the Pretenders song...

  6. Yes, the LATE Tammy Faye.

No, no need to post another song just for moi. I'm so very happy with the Songbird video.

And I really must stop monopolizing your comments section.

  7. MJ:

Tammy Faye looked dead long before she died, with all that makeup she wore...

I would not have posted that Pretenders song, whether you requested it or not!

Yes, you really must stop monopolizing. On the other hand, maybe no one else will.

  8. Maybe I should not be here...of that list I recognise only 8 names (And for a long time, I pronounced INXS "inks")
What remains on my list? Nothing over and over, but to come back to now and then:
Sinatra (Frank, not the kids), Nat King Cole, Nina Simone, Marion Montgomery,Paul Robeson,Billy Joel, Scott Engel,Edith Piaf, Neil Diamond,
Leonard Cohen,Ossi Bisa, Miriam Makeba...and that's used up quite enough of your space!
(that's not a band, just in case you thought it was an obscure Inuit Throat Singing enemble!)
And please tell that woman who's spreading that ghastly ear worm she gon get hers, f'sho!

  9. Dinahmow:

Of course you should be here! I love Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole is one of my all-time faves!

I must say the only others I recognize from your list are Billy Joel, Neil Diamond and Leonard Cohen...

I'll play something from one of these tomorrow...any specific requests? I'd lean towards Mack the Knife or Cole's duet with his daughter, after he died...

  10. Great list WW!

I find myself drawn to songs according to mood. So that would be the classics like Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald or even Michael Buble. Then I have my seventies thingie where I can listen to the Beegees' More than a Woman over and over and over. Dancing and driving mood would be my Chill music playlist and of course there are the songs that make me go awwww and launch into my karaoke mood in the car with my hubby which always cracks him up.

Did any of that make sense??? I'm in a weekend mode already, sorry.

    :D

  11. Mench:

It made PERFECT sense. I'll come up with More Than a Woman sometime in the next day or two.

Did I ever tell you HE and I always did the Bee Gees thing, with that song and Stayin' Alive?

  12. I'm a lot like Menchie - it all depends on my mood. And the list seems endless. If I had to name a few, I'd say:

    Secret Garden - Bruce Springsteen
    Refugee - Melissa Etheridge
    Crazy On You - Heart
A Thousand Beautiful Things - Annie Lennox (thanks to you, dear WW)
    I'm A Creep - Radio
    Hallelujah - Rufus Wainwright
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Into the Mystic - Van Morrison
I'm the Man - Joe Jackson
Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
My One and Only Love - Sting
I Like the Way You Move - Bodyrockers
Pump It - Black Eyed Peas
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - Van Halen
    Panama - Van Halen

Eeeks! I've named too many! What can I say... I love music. I'm sorry - I'll stop now.

  13. By the way, Eva Cassidy did a version of Songbird that is supposed to be very impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anna:

Narrow it down...what can I play for you? Unless I hear different, it'll be Annie Lennox...

    ReplyDelete
  15. You don't have to play anything for me, WW. My computer overheats and dies everytime I try to watch something on Youtube anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  16. OH! Remixing Nat and Natalie Cole was an inspired move!
My speakers have died, but thanks for the offer.
I should have listed Bobby Darin and early Andy Williams. And lots, lots more. Most of it either very old-hat or never mainstream! Hey! I dance to my own drum!

  17. I fluctuate. I'm with MJ in that there's far too many to list in full. For the last few days I've had "The Song That Goes Like This" from Spamalot stuck in my head. However songs that keep popping up... "Die Romantic" by Aiden (a band, not my husband), "Brena" by A Perfect Circle, "No Surprises" by Radiohead (when I'm feeling depressed), "Son Of A Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield (when I want to exercise my vocal chords), and many many many songs from movies and musicals. There is ALWAYS a song in my head, it's like my own private radio!

Nope. Is that bad ? :-) I'm more a silence person with a head full of images. However, sometimes I do play music, when I need energy I like hard rock, when I want a relaxed concentration in painting I play zenlike music, sometimes I even turn on the radio :-)

  20. Wow, you're right.
Maybe it's not too late for me to get 'into' music and start listening to a few songs.

  21. Dinahmow/Menchie:

I know D's computer has no speakers, but you both mentioned Frankie, so he'll be up there soon...

    Anna:

OK, but never say I didn't try to be your VJ/DJ.

    Stace:

Son of a Preacher Man? Whatever floats ur boat (I know, I know...it is catchy...)

    Hildegarde:

No, the question was DO YOU have a favourite few songs you always listen to.

    Zen, huh?

    Angel:

    ROCK LOBSTER! Excellent choice...

    HE:

I guess that's meant to point out how you're Mr. Music Man, at least compared to me...

OK, so I hereby officially declare, you got that right. For every one song I listen to, you probably listen to 100.

But when I get in the swing -- which I was the other night -- it makes me see what I'm missing.

I just don't do it every day...or every week, that's all.

    ReplyDelete
  22. WW, there are some songs that I love just because they feel great to sing, it has nothing to do with the song itself! Sometimes it's just a great melody to the vocals, or the perfect range to suit my voice. Son of a Preacher Man is one of them :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Stace:

There was never ANY intent to question your taste, not at all, and I guess I could have made it clearer that...well, wasn't Dusty way before your time?

But even that doesn't matter. I know from your own blog that you enjoy singing and music is to each of us what it is, and that's one of the beauties of it.

What I want to see now is a YouTube vid of you singing Son of the Preacher Man.

If that can't happen, I'm going to try to find it on YouTube and post it here so you can sing along to it yourself, in front of your puter.

    :-)

  24. Quite a lot of my musical taste is "before my time"! I love 60's and 70's rock, and I wasn't even born until 1983 ;)

I'm afraid I don't have a webcam, so you'll have to find it for me :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. where was 'deck the halls'?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Stace:

OK, Dusty's up there now. Go crazy. And get a webcam!

    Ziggi:

I'll get into that Christmas spirit once my daughter and I, with no help from my son, get the tree up...

Watch for Deck the Halls, coming to a blog near you...

    ReplyDelete
  27. OK, I knocked myself out, thanks! :) Aidan and I are talking of getting a whole new computer anyway, so maybe we'll include a webcam in the package :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Stace:

OK girl, glad you could knock yourself out...now if we could only see it on YouTube!

Say hi to Aidan for me, the louse...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Aidan will be home in 4 more sleeps!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Stace:

Oh, JOY! Can I visit at the same time?

    ReplyDelete
  31. ww- 4,5, and 39 on your list do it for me :). Just trying to think about songs I come back to a lot -put your dreams away by frank sinatra,stax-steve poltz(very moving song), gypsy-fleetwood mac, heroes-david bowie, looking for friends-andy white, overkill-men at work, boys of summer-don henley, cruel to be kind -nick lowe.Oh, that had better do, could go on forever.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lee:

NOW I know who Steve Poltz is!!! But I couldn't find the song called Stax...it's not on YouTube.

However, I DID put up Thunderclap Newman for you. I was hoping someone would say them...
