I'M SO UNAMERICAN

IT WAS LATE LAST SUMMER.

...AND AFTER RECEIVING THIS BILL BELOW ONLY LAST WEEK, I NOW REMEMBER THE INCIDENT ALL TOO WELL.

I don't know if you'll be able to click on this scanned image to read what the bill says. But it's from Budget eToll of Great Neck, N.Y. (Why would a place be called Great Neck, anyway?)

And it claims that while I was driving one of their rented cars, I failed to pay a 40-cent toll somewhere around Chicago on Aug. 28.

Either because my "PERSONAL TRANSPONDER FAILED TO WORK" or because I KNOWINGLY OR UNKNOWINGLY FAILED TO PAY THE TOLL.

My personal transponder, whatever that is, works just fine, thank you!!!

Whatever. As a result, I now have to pay a bill of $45.40 US in fines and administration fees.

I've been to Chicago a number of times, mostly to cover Stanley Cup hockey finals, but I've never had to rent a car.

Last summer, I had to cover our baseball team as it wound up its season in Joliet, Illinois, not that far from Chicago.

And then I had to carry on with the team to Gary, Indiana, for the start of the playoffs.

Joliet, as you might have heard, houses one of America's most dangerous prisons, or at least used to. Gary was once America's murder capital. Great assignment.

And now I feel like I've been victimized myself for being a goofy Canajun.

I flew to Chicago, rented the car, tried to make sure I had enough American change for all the tolls I expected to encounter.

I nixed Budget's offer of a car equipped with GPS, got my maps out, and merrily went on my way.

Well, not merrily. I had some nerves.

When you come from Flatland, Canada, a place with few freeways and no toll booths but high taxes (hmmm...so how come our roads are so lousy compared to theirs?), a place you've lived most of your life that you know like the back of your hand...

...And you pile into a car to navigate some of the busiest and most congested freeways, highways and byways of one of the most densely populated areas in North America, you just might have a little trepidation.

It's called ChicagoLand, for gawd's sake. It's another world from what I'm used to.

Long and short of it is, I had the toll booth thingy all worked out on my route.

Unfortunately, I took a wrong turn at Albuquerque and had to double back about 20 miles to get the correct turnoff for Joliet.

I had to go through two more tolls (unmanned ones) than I planned for. I ran out of change. But I couldn't pull over to get more change.

I'm on about a 360-lane freeway with bumper to bumper traffic at rush hour.

I have some Canadian change, but not enough American change. As I inch up towards the big collector thingie, I try to throw in some Canadian change with the American change I have left.

It won't register as paid.

I quickly jump out of my rental car, run to the guy behind me, explain I'm a stupid Canajun and offer him $5 American for the proper American change -- 40 cents!

Before he can say anything, and with horns blaring at this idiotic, pathetic driver they're all being forced to wait for, I put the fiver in his hands.

Dumbfounded, he reluctantly gives me his change, I run back to my car, toss it in the collector thingie and drive off.

I'm convinced that's where they got me.

I think the collector thingie didn't properly register the amount of change I threw in -- or I did something else wrong -- and so for not paying that 40-cent toll, I'm being dinged $45.40.

What's that, more than a 1,000-per-cent surcharge? I'm terrible at math, but I know it's a lot.

Hopefully the one thing you CAN read on that bill is right at the bottom: BOO HOO!

  1. That's a bummer Chris. We don't have toll roads here in Seattle. (Well, there is a toll bridge in Tacoma and talk of putting toll booths in across our lakes) but so far we've been toll free.

    I feel your pain :)

    ReplyDelete
  2. Dude, that totally sucks. Can you dispute it? Surely there must be a way for them to check it, a video camera or something... in Melbourne, pretty much all tolls are now electronic - people who drive a road regularly have an e-tag on their dashboard, and people who are visiting can pay up to two days later online.

  3. Pamela:

I think they should call them troll roads, not toll roads. It's certainly a foreign concept here but when in Rome...

    Stace:

I'm sure I could try to dispute it, but to try to do that long-distance...nah. Not worth the effort, I figure.

They couldn't/wouldn't dare putting up toll roads here. We pay massive government taxes here as it is and the roads are STILL in terrible shape.

Now, if they cut our taxes to fit the level of services those taxes pay for (almost zilch) and THEN brought in tolls, it might make more sense. But then you'd have the inconvenience factor.

I think I'll just start using my spaceship to fly to work.

But what does nyuck mean? And you're blogging more than ever before. WTF?

  6. But what does nyuck mean?

    That’s my Three Stooges laugh.

  10. Why SOY-ten-ly!

You’re lucky I didn’t poke you in the eye, slap you across the face three times and give you a head conk.

    Woo-woo-woo-woo!

  11. Want some cheese to go with that whine? ;-) Just teasin, that does seem like quite the penalty, and ridiculous at best.

Here in Montana we don't have toll roads. We barely have pavement...

    ReplyDelete
  12. MJ:

What's a head conk? Is it related to the things with shells that roam the Pacific?

A slap in the face would only have gotten me all heated up...:-)

    Laurie:

Are you saying I've got the Whine Flu? You've got nice roads in Montana. And gorgeous mountains.

  13. Ridicuolousity! Just tell them you just did a spring clean and your transponder is at the dry cleaner (along with your cloaking device). Beam me up, Scotty! (and pfffft to Chicago after our Stanley Cup fiasco.)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Andrea:

My transponder and my cloaking device are the drycleaner's? Do you think that would pass muster?

These are Americans, after all. They'll sic the CIA and the FBI on me to recover this cash!

Never tell me to beam you up. You will never survive the experience. Chicago, I'm sorry to say, deserved to win. (**Runs away giggling**)

Hi everyone who reads this blog. This is Gerry, Chris' younger brother. I have some very bad news. Chris collapsed at home today (his kids were there) and was rushed to hospital. He has suffered a serious stroke and apparently is close to death.
I am replying to his last post cause I know some of you will read this.

I think you all mean a lot to my brother so I thought I would let you know.

Please say a prayer for Chris.

  17. Gerry, I read about his stroke at Donn's blog. I send my get well vibes and prayers for his recovery. He has to get well quickly becos who else do I argue with?

I live in India but it does not matter.

Just an update everyone - what Chris has is a blood clot in one of the major arteries in his brain. It is not something the doctors can operate on due to its location.

It is a wait and see game but he is hanging in there like I knew he would.

He is conscious and able to speak although his situation is critical.

  23. Gerry, I live in Wpg. Is there any way I can get in touch with you? Are you staying at Chris' place? Can I call you there?

  25. Gerry: Thank you for notifying us and thanks to Donn too for blogging about it.

This must be incredibly tough on both of you.

    And now over to Chris.

    Listen up Winky Weinerhead...

If this is your way of getting out of cleaning behind your fridge or reorganizing your messy shoe closet, it's not funny.

I just hope you have some pretty nurses in short skirts taking care of you.

Get back here asap, will ya?

Some of us are rather fond of you, you know.

  26. I'm with MJ. You'd better be back soon or you'll have US to deal with. Hugs and good vibes, young man! xo

  28. FYI:

I have just returned from the hospital and Chris said to thank everyone for the kind words and not to make a fuss.

He is fairly lucid but very very tired, and he is slurring a bit, his headache comes and goes,
but he doesn't seem to have lost any memory.

Chris was joking around even though he was very groggy...he thought that he'd be going home tomorrow..pfft..I tried to explain that he needs to just take it easy for a while.

You'll be happy to know that he is teasing the staff..albeit in slow motion..but it's good to see that his personality remains intact.

I'm going back tonight after my daughter's dance recital...it's always surreal when events circumvent your routine..
a great reminder that we should always embrace "ordinary" days.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thanks very much to Gerry and Donn for the updates. It's fantastic to hear that he's doing better. Tell him from me to listen to his doctors and nurses (and friends and family) and take it easy!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes, as Stace says, a huge thanks to Gerry and Donn for keeping us up to date on Chris.

Good news that he has his memory and if all he has for residual effects is slurred speech when he is tired, well, he's a damn lucky man!

Nice to hear he is his usual teasing self. Big warm hugs to him. And big hugs to everyone else who cares about him.

    Hi everyone

as of around 9:00 PM May 17, Chris was the same as what Donn describes albeit he was finally getting a bit of sleep.

He is very tired and the time in emergency is starting to stress him a bit. It is very noisy and busy in the ward but they can't move him.

As to treatment they are trying to determine why this event happened and to see if that helps them determine how to treat the clot, which remains near his brain.

    Wait and see for now...

    Regards,

    Gerry

  33. get well soon big guy. we love you.

    ReplyDelete
  34. REPOSTING this from my blog FYI:

Ok just left the hospital and Chris is getting admitted tomorrow which means that he will be shuffled to a quieter ward so that he can get some sleep..
aside from his nagging headache he just wants to sleep...he did sleep a little but he is very uncomfortable and restless and the IV lines are driving him crazy.

The Emerg was super busy when I got there at midnight..packed with people, beeping machines and anxious relatives helplessly pacing about. As you can imagine, it would be nearly impossible to sleep under such conditions.

I told him that I loved him but not enough to donate one of my brains. Anyway, hopefully they can transfer him this morning so that he can get some real ZZZ's.

The situation could be much worse so I am grateful for small mercies.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Like everyone, I am sending my best wishes to you, Chris (Donn and Gerry, please pass that on to him for me).

Tell him if he gets well and outta the hospital soon and I'll pay his doggone ticket for him!

    Sending Montana hugs...

  41. UPDATE:
Chris looks much better than when I last saw him at midnight..he has been admitted into the Medical Ward and he had his MRA today..the results of which will prolly be explained tomorrow..along with the course of action..ie which clot busters they will use?

From a layman's point of view, his spirits were up, he had some colour, he had slept, he could get up and go to the washroom..although he did see stars after..however he was much brighter today.

I don't know if he is out of the woods or not because he is still on heparin and I don't know anything about the clot busting drugs that will be administered.

Either way he was joking around and it was very encouraging..hopefully tomorrow will be even better.

    ReplyDelete
  42. To add to Donn's update:

I sat with Chris for a while after Donn and his lovely wife left (it was a pleasure to meet the two of you!) as he'd started seeing a shiney thing in his left eye after getting up and using the bathroom... and considering he'd been lying around in a bed for the last two days, that wasn't a very good thing.

But he got some Tylenol for his headache and the shiney bits went away fairly quickly after lying down so probably just too much uprightness too soon.

He seems to be his normal witty self and even got a couple of quips in before Donn did when we were all talking. Just very tired.

But no, he isn't out of the woods yet. And I don't think they know what the plan of attack will be until they figure out what they are seeing on the MRI (MRA) of his brain.

I will be popping to see him again tomorrow before I start work at 3:30. Keep sending all those positive vibes through the cyberwaves.... he needs them all.

Thanks, everyone.... it's really nice to see how many people care... especially when almost none of us have ever met.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Once again, thanks for the updates. It's a huge relief to read about him being upright and joking and stuff. Wonderful to hear :)

Hi all - this is Chris' brother Gerry. I just got a call from my mom. Chris has been experiencing more "symptoms" which is not a good sign. He has been rushed to the Health Sciences Centre in an ambulance. This is the best equipped facility in Winnipeg for this issue. I don't know anything more. This happened around 9:30 or so.

That is all I know - waiting to hear more back from my mom or sister who have gone to that hospital. - I may be on my way back to the Peg.

    ReplyDelete
  52. It's 3 am I just got back..
Chris had another TIA right in front of us and had to be intubated..he suffered some paralysis on his right side..the doctors decided to go ahead and try the clot busting agents which was very risky because he has been on thinners for 2 days and he had a lumbar fluid extraction..this is uncharted territory but they went ahead because there are two clots.

The first one has hardened and the second one that formed caused the latest TIAs and the effect was the loss of his right side...we waited and the doctor said that he had responded and had regained the use of his right side but he was still very susceptible to having a major bleed. Basically they were trying to get Chris back to point B and once stabilized hope that the body would start deconstructing the first clot which is now hardened.

So tonight he is being moved into the ICU and sedated so that his body can try to manage the powerful clot busting agent..so it is very touch and go but the return of his control of his right side is encouraging.

Now they are going to watch him like a hawk to see ifthe bleeding gets out of hand...which could be fatal. Again we can do nothing but wait and see how he does. This roller coaster ride is taking it's toll on his kids, parents and siblings...but we all remain hopeful that it works out.

It's amazing because this afternoon he was bright and when we saw him this evening he was bugging us about rushing down to see him and then his eyes rolled up and he had a TIA right before our eyes.

The staff has been fabulous and his family was moved into a private room..my heart goes out to his family..his beloved children are being brave and hopeful..Chris would be very proud of them as he always is..I'm hoping for some good news tomorrow but the next 12 hours will be very dangerous with all the powerful thinning agents circulating.

Hang in there buddy, you've got a lot of people who love you..hang in there...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thanks for the update, Donn. Please give him my best if it seems appropriate. You all continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Sorry, I didn't post this on here last night - no just a few hours ago - when getting home from the hospital:

Tuesday early a.m. - an update on Chris. He was taken to the bigger hospital because he had another little stroke where he had right sided weakness and slurred speech, so they decided to transfer him to where the neurosciences specialists are.

Chris was transferred to the bigger hospital around 9:30 pm after having that little stroke. Once I found out that, I decided to go to the hospital. I couldn't just sit here and do nothing.

Shortly after he got there, he had another stroke but a big one. He had right sided paralysis and difficulty breathing. They had to sedate him and intubate him and put him on a ventilator to help his breathing. After a short time, they gave him another drug to counteract the sedation so they could assess if he was having any spontaneous recovery (which he had been having after each small stroke). He couldn't talk because of the breathing tube but he did follow commands and looked right at the doctor. At that time, however, he was unable to do anything with his right hand or foot.

Because he had had the first big stroke on Saturday afternoon, the original clot was too mature for them to use the clot busting drug on that one, but the new clot (they did a CT scan after this last event) would be fresh enough to hopefully respond. The risks are very high, though, because he has been on a blood thinning IV for two days plus he had a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) done on Saturday. Both of those are contraindicated for the IV TPA (clot buster) but they felt that it was his only hope of recovering any function. His case is very outside the box because of the location of the clot, the fact that he's so young and that he seems to be throwing clots from somewhere (the CT scan showed there is no injury to the artery in his brain).

So what they did was give him the clot bluster over an hour, hoping like hell that he won't have any complications - like a massive bleed in his brain or his spinal column (from the blood thinner IV and the spinal tap). They expected to see some kind of reponse about half way through the infusion (at about 30 mins) but nothing. Just before it was done, he started moving his right leg. Then was able to move more and more of his right side.

That is all good news but he is still so deep in the forest, you can't even see the edge of the trees. What they are hoping for is that by breaking down the new clot from this evening's stroke, it will let blood through to his brain to prevent the paralysis. And then, over time, his body will reabsorb the older clot. It is too mature to respond to the clot buster. That stuff only works when the clot is still rather jellylike.

So it is touch and go but positive enough that I came home to try and get some sleep. He has been sent to ICU and the next 12 hours will show what his recovery will be like.

  55. Chris: This is the farthest anyone of us have ever gone to get out of updating our blog posts.

    ReplyDelete
  56. As of 10:20 AM there is no change and this means that Chris is not experiencing any internal bleeding form all of the clot busting agents.
Hopefully they can get him back to point B so that his body can deal with the first clot.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Word from Donn is that the doctors think the stroking is over (lobbing blood clots is something Chris is getting good at, but not a skill anyone wants him to perfect) and now it is a waiting game... to see how much swelling there is in his brain.

Only once the swelling has gone down (which will take several days), they will be able to make a better estimation of damage and what things will be like for Chris.

Cross everything you've got, peeps. Chris needs every good thought and pray and vibe there is.

    ReplyDelete
  67. As of this evening he was breathing on his own, he did recognise his Mother, and now he has to make it through the swelling period...after that they can see what's what.

Hopefully he will be in the hospital for a few weeks and then on to rehab for a few months..which will be minimal if he is lucky.

I did whisper to him that all of you were making a big fuss so hopefully that will be enough for him to snap out of it :)

    ReplyDelete

  80. The updates are really appreciated, Donn and Ponita. I've followed at Donn's blog and here too -just new here, redirected from HE, saw Chris so often commenting there!-.

Man, I'm glad to see you're getting a little better. I really hope the nightamre is over and you start recovering soon.

    Best wishes!

  84. Wednesday Morning
Chris made it through the night without incident. According to his brother Gerry (who spent the entire night by his side) he is responding to questions via hand squeezes.

Chris' main threat now is brain swelling so he is under intensive observation but so far so good...which considering and hoping that the stroke phase has actually ended, means that Chris has rounded 1st base and is heading for 2nd.

Chris has an amazing family helping him and I am encouraged..
I'm into the No News is Good News phase...hopefully that means that his recuperative powers are about to get medieval on his brain!

    ReplyDelete
  85. I am THRILLED to read this update! Thank you! He's going to go for a home run... I just know it.

    ReplyDelete
  86. So, Donn...

You're saying he has a swollen head?

*imagines Chris bravely recuperating and saying, "It's only a flesh wound."*

    ReplyDelete
  87. Thanks Donn.

It does sound encouraging. You don't have to donate one your brains. (Your non-existent brain is of no use to him).

He will son be back back slapping you and making us all crazy with laughter, and of course driving us to despair. Better than bein in the hospital, missing out all of us crazy people worrying about him.

Do give him my love when you see him.

    ReplyDelete
  88. My typing sucks! But who cares!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Although it may seem totally devastating that Chris can only give hand squeezes right now, he is only beginning to heal.

There is every possibility that he will recover most function again. As was evidenced by my uncle a few months ago. Stroked so severely they did last rights and everything. He was not expected to survive that night at all. He now walks and talks and no one would know he'd had both feet in death's door. The only sign of a problem is he tires easily... but he is in his mid 70's, after all.

So although you may think it seems like Chris won't ever get out of that bed again, don't give up hope for him. The brain and body have amazing capacities to heal huge injuries. And he is young. He has that on his side. He has strength on his side.

Plus he's a fighter... a stubborn guy who is probably duking it out in his head right now with all the swelling and uncooperative grey cells.

He's got lots of love pouring out for him from everywhere... right here with his kids and family and friends... and from all of you out there in bloggerland.

  90. To show our love, all the ladies of Snippets should line up by Chris’s bedside and let him squeeze our ….

    Ahem.

    Our hands.

    Yes, that’s it.

    Let him squeeze our “hands”.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Squeeze, Chris, squeeze!!

  93. Angel, the updates are now coming via Donn. I am just adding in medical stuff to help clarify things for everyone. Donn is the one we all need to thank now... and to support, as he and Chris have been best buds for decades. Chris is in ICU so only family can be with him.

  94. That's good news, and I don't know you Chris, but I'm fussing away like the rest of these good people and I KNOW you'll be reading these entries soon so sending lots of comforting thoughts from the westcoast. Or wimpcoast, that's right, get better soon so I can be entertained again listening to you tease Andrea about where we live.

Donn, comforting thoughts to you too, be well, get lots of rest.

  95. Chris, I posted a poem for you on my blog. See , you finally made me write one for you. If you had only asked, I would gladly done so much before today.

  98. Isn't it WONDERFUL what loving a person whether you have met them or not can do to help them?

I have never been one to believe in straight on miracles, not like one is taught in Church, not that they do not happen, but that we sometimes forget to look right in front of us to find what we need. Yet there are those miracles that are needed and so deserved, well... I cannot imagine a more deserving person.

    soft love,

  99. I think this is comment #100, Chris. If you stay in there much longer, you're going to have 1000 comments to read.

Loving hugs... please fight strong, Chris.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Ponita beat me to number 69 AND to number 100!

How many comments can this thing hold, anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  101. You're slowing down in your old age, MJ! :-P

I have no idea if there is a limit on comments. If there is, perhaps Donn can start up another post where we can keep commenting until Chris can read all them.

Or someone will need to take a laptop computer to him in hospital so he can blog about what's gong on.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Yes, if he really cared about us, he would be blogging from his sick bed.

    Come on, would ya, Chris?

    ReplyDelete
  103. Wednesday Afternoon..
The good news is that there is no bad news to report...which I interpret as positive.

Let's hope that the swelling is minimal...it looks like maybe, just maybe, the TIAs really are finished. I'm hoping that his family has a chance to catch their breath and regain their strength.
I hope that I can get a shift soon...I feel better when I can actually see him.

If he is up to it, maybe by next week I'll bring his laptop so that he can see what fantastic friends he has out here...
I did print a few pages to bring along and he'll be happy to see that the wise cracks and asshattery are back!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Thanks Donn for updating us. Please let Chris and his family know they are not alone. We are all thinking of them throughout the day and wishing for the fastest of recoveries. Peaceful rest tonight Chris and Gerry.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Thanks, Donn! Did you print out Gautami's poem too? I think he would be tickled pink with that. Please let us know if you get to see him and how he is.

    Hugs to you too.

  108. Very glad to hear that no news can be interpreted as good news. Sounds like things are on the up and up. Fingers, toes, and those things MJ mentioned, all crossed for you Chris. Anatomical impossibility notwithstanding. Hang in there, my friend, you still have to come and visit us one day soon! (If it weren't for the pregnancy, I'd probably be on a plane coming to visit you right now, so what's your excuse?!)

  111. THURSDAY
No incidents last night and Chris is now out of the ICU but he still has a way to go get past the dnager of swelling.

His parents and all of his brothers & sisters are there to support him...amazing family.

I'm sneaking in there later this morning but I'm feeling a little more confident that Chris has entered a new phase...hope I'm right.
    Keep those good vibes coming.

  118. Thursday Update: I was in to see Chris for a brief visit. He is still unable to move his right side, his speech is very slurred and he's not really all that awake yet.

They did an ultrasound of his brain earlier today (results not yet known) and will be putting in a feeding tube as he's been without nutrition since late Tuesday. He's got an IV for fluids.

He is not able to eat yet, so the feeding tube will be one that ends in his small bowel. They need to bypass the stomach as he's spending most of his time lying down, and because his swallowing ability is unknown (he does swallow spontaneously but effectiveness is not determined), they cannot risk putting any nutritional formulas in his stomach and have him regurgitate it and possibly aspirate it into his lungs.

They are a bit concerned about his blood pressure, as it is going a bit high, so they will probably be starting him on BP meds for that.

He didn't open his eyes when I was there, but he did respond to me when I talked to him, told him who I was... he squeezed my hand a number of times when I talked to him, at appropriate times, which leads me to believe he's in there but isn't able to fully communicate yet.

He did mumble something when I told him about all the people in bloggerland who are sending best wishes... I think it was something about cutting out all the mushy stuff... :-)

His family talked with me and asked that visiting be restricted to family only right now, as they absorb all that is happening with Chris and until he is more awake and aware.

His mum especially is feeling very fragile as she watches her first baby struggle with all this. I cannot even imagine how difficult this is for her, and for the rest of the family. My heart goes out to all of them.

So please, everyone who is in Winnipeg, just stay tuned here and updates will be posted as they come in. Chris' sister Lisa said she would keep me informed of everything, as I am sure she will with Donn. Between the two of us, you'll know what we know.

    ReplyDelete
  119. He did mumble something when I told him about all the people in bloggerland who are sending best wishes... I think it was something about cutting out all the mushy stuff... :-)

Tell him to get up off his ass, then!

    Thanks, Ponita.

Can you flow beer through that feeding tube?

  120. phew - one more step along the right road - Come on Chris, gis us a squeeze!

    ReplyDelete
  121. lots o'love from savannah, ga, sugar! xooxoo

    ReplyDelete
  122. You probably could fill the bag with beer, MJ... but considering it would go directly into his gut, with no burps to get rid of some of the bubbles, he'd probably end up killing the other patients in his room with the beer farts!

I think he prefers rye and pepsi, though. That might be a little less toxic to anyone within 20 ft of him. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  123. Donn and Pon,

I will be out of town without my computer for the next five days and probably won't be able to stay up to date on Chris's recovery or send encouraging comments to him.

I will be extremely worried, of course, but please let him know that I am thinking of him and sending healing thoughts his way.

I will try to find internet access along the way so that I won't drive myself crazy worrying (not much of a drive, eh?).

Big hugs to all and Chris, I'll send you all the mountain pics you can stand if you will just get well!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I've just heard the news from Donn. I don't want to mush or send slush that will make Chris blush. He's got enough blood in his head. He's got to get out of that bed as soon as possible.

Or else I'm coming in. That'd slay him.

Get up, Chris. You know it's the best for both of us xxx

Friday morning, my time (I'm in Stace's half of the world) and I've just been through ALL these comments.
It took a long time because my eyes are leaking.
If Chris is able to understand please tell him this is a crap way to avoid paying Unca Sam's toll. Also tell him I was relying on him for Stanley Cup reports. Oh, yes, please also tell him he's in my thoughts 24/7. Get well, Chris.
And huge thanks to Ponita, Donn and Gerry for the commentary.

    ReplyDelete
  128. The commentary is thoughtful and detailed and very appreciated. I keep up and send continued good vibes to Chris and all around him.

Now, in regard to the orignal post. Chris, believe it or not, I happen to spend a good amount of time in Great Neck. So my question is... whose ass can I kick for you?

    ReplyDelete
  129. This is like Shakespeare: I both laugh and cry when I visit for updates. And thanks for the cut-to-the-chase Ponita ("killing the other patients in his room with the beer farts!"). Puts it all in perspective, dunnit?

Calling in all my outstanding karma for you at this time, Chris!

  130. This afternoon I watched Chris struggle..he is lucid at times but it's hard to tell how often our communication is getting through. At one point he was very uncomfortable and he said something that sounded like he wanted to roll onto his other side.

I said that we were 'dense' and that we couldn't figure out what he was trying to say..he opened his eyes wide and said "YES YOU PEOPLE ARE DENSE!" and we all burst into laughter.
It certainly proved that he was in the moment.

I brought my Ipod and played Spaceship Orion for him ...
he seemed to smile...music brings memories back and I talked it over with his family and they all said sure..I'll probably keep doing that.

Tomorrow should be a benchmark day and hopefully any swelling will start to subside and then the Doctors can assess what kind of challenges he is facing. I won't speculate about that I'll wait and let Chris show and tell us what he is really feeling...aside from being frustrated and mad and uncomfortable.

It certainly seems as if he is in a different phase but that could all change in a heartbeat if the swelling subsides...which is what I am hoping.

Meanwhile his amazing family is cocooning him in a soft envelope of patient love and encouragement. It really is astounding. He is on to another ward where the neurologists can start deciphering the events of the past few days.

I believe that he hears everything that we are saying and he is cognizant that when he tries to talk that it's a bit garbled and that is making him frustrated...therefore he WILL do everything in his power to rectify the situation...and he needs to rest, he looks so tired and he nods off, in and out, but Chris definitely showed up today. I saw it with my own two eyes..he's in there somewhere and I have little doubt that in no time at all he'll be telling me off for blabbing about all of this...which is fine with me..bring it on big guy, bring it on!

    ReplyDelete
  131. "I said that we were 'dense' and that we couldn't figure out what he was trying to say..he opened his eyes wide and said "YES YOU PEOPLE ARE DENSE!" and we all burst into laughter. It certainly proved that he was in the moment."EXCELLENT!!!! That is wonderful news, Donn. I am so happy that you saw him emerge, even if just for that few seconds. If he could speak understandably today, only 5 days after the initial insult to his brain and less than three after that big one the the ER, it shows that his ability to recover, speech for sure and maybe lots more, should be huge!

Way to go, Chris!!! You can do it!!! Positive healing thoughts and feelings being sent to you.

that is the best news i have heard all day.... thanks for keeping us posted Donn

    ReplyDelete
  135. Please bear in mind that his outburst was very garbled and it appeared as though delivering that line took all of his strength...I don't want to be a wet blanket because it did prove that he was there...my guess is that Chris is trapped behind the fog and that he knows what's what but can't smash through at will.

Today my hope is that he can communicate for more than a few seconds at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Donn, thank you for that wonderful update! I check back several times a day for updates and I'm so grateful for the ones you've been providing.

Music sounds like a fantastic idea! It does so much for our brains and our souls and we all know how much Chris loves music. If you can and if you don't mind a request, please include "A Thousand Beautiful Things" by Annie Lennox.

I also just want to say how heartwarming it is to see so many showing their support for a man most have never met. I think it shows how many lives he touches and how valuable of a soul he is to so many.

    ReplyDelete

Thanks for your updates Donn, I will try to check in on the road.

Love to both of you and to all Chris's faithful friends,
    Laurie

    ReplyDelete
  139. Donn, I am sure it took everything he had to make himself understood for that brief moment. And I do absolutely believe that Chris is in there and just not able to get to the surface most of the time.

That is the way things are with stroke victims... trapped inside a body that doesn't do what they want it to do. Which is why it is so frustrating for them. They know what they want to do and say, and are unable to make their body perform as they intend.

But the fact that he made that effort, and you did understand what he said, despite it being garbled, really does show that he is there and he's got the potential for improvement.

It is so early after the brain injury and the fact that he's a stubborn and determined man all point in his favour. He has a very long road ahead, but I am certain he will make great strides, especially with the love and support of his fantastic family and all the friends who are rallying behind him.

Good on you, Chris! Rest now and then work hard.

    ReplyDelete

  145. FRIDAY NIGHT
I had a little one on one with Chris after his sister left..he has been moved to a much quieter room on a different floor.

Chris seemed a little calmer but his immobilized hand and arm have some swelling and he has a feeding tube.

He asked for his eye glasses, his speech is still garbly but he can get it out..he is still very within/ without..
Chris dozes off after a few moments but he did seem a little more comfortable today?

I put the headphones on him again and played music for him for about half an hour..poor guy I've been forcing him to listen to music I like for almost 30 years HA!

Anyway he was trying to tap his fingers to Clocks by Coldplay and his eyes opened up when he heard the song "Within Without" by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

I told him that I knew that he could hear me and he squeezed my hand a little tighter. I wish that I could tell you more hard news.
Maybe tomorrow. All in all, Chris seemed a little less agitated but he also seemed a little weaker..which you would expect from being stuck in a bed for a week..but the little squeeze made my day and I thought that it was better than yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Donn, he's just starting to get some nutrition today and it's been a few days since he last ate... the weakness could be partly that. It could be also that he just now feels he can actually get some real rest, which he desperately needs.

I'm so glad you are spending time with him and that he is responding to you, even if just with hand squeezes.

This is just the beginning of his recovery. We all have to be patient with him. This isn't something he will recover from in a week. Loving him and supporting him and prodding him occasionally to do his damndest to improve are all anyone can do.

Please tell him I am thinking of him. Thanks for the update. Hugs to you and him.

Everyone in the world that has either met or heard of you has been here. Of course that only shows how much you mean to so many. Oh Chris........ I am just seeing this now. I am so sorry to hear of this happeneing to you and also sad that I am seeing this so late in the day.
I hope you are making a good recovery. I too had a stroke when I was only 28, and I am on warfarin for life now. Luckily mine was only a small clot and I lost some peripheral vision, but I do remeber clearly even though it was 16 years ago now the struggle that ensued to come to terms with what had happened etc.
I will be thinking of you, and hoping the recovery happens smoothly and as completely as possible, possible. You seem like such a super person from your blog that it makes me really sad to hear that this has happened to you.
If you ever want to chat I think you have my e mail address.

    With love and best wishes

    Laura

  179. Chris, I wish you had set this up so the dates showed and not just the time.

Today is Saturday, Sept 19th. It is just after midnight and I just got home from work (evenings on Friday). I've been following the blog Donn set up for you but I don't comment for reasons that he knows about.

But I just wanted to say that I am so pleased with the progress you've made so far. I spent a long time being terrified for you, waiting to hear the worst, but you have far exceeded expectations in your recovery and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Knowing you as well as I do, knowing the kind of person you are, and caring about you as I do, it means the world to me that you are regaining function and independence. It is my fervent hope that you will one day be living on your own and writing again... either here or back at the newspaper (hey, anything's possible, right?!) or even both.

I wish you nothing but the best. You own a piece of my heart, Chris. You are a very special man, not only to your friends and family, but to so many who have only met you through your blog and comments elsewhere in the Blogiverse.

    P xoxo
