My STUFF...

IT'S NOT EVEN DECEMBER YET, AND I HAVE CABIN FEVER ALREADY.

A snow-storm and windchill temperatures of around -30C (while it's +17C a mere province away) can do that to you. I feel shut in, a bit shut down, knowing winter has grabbed us.

And won't likely let go until March at the earliest. For you Aussies, South Africans, Floridians, Mississippians and others living in southern climes, this means many things.

It means I have now started plugging my car in at night to keep the engine block from freezing so I can start my car in the morning.

It means shovelling snow and skin freezing in less than a minute.

And it means staying inside a lot and unavoidably becoming more introspective. That means thinking about me.

And what I have within these walls that I spend most of my time in, things that make me feel warm and secure and comfortable.

Here are a few of them:

This is my Marvin the Martian coffee cup. M the M is one of my favourite Bugs Bunny characters of all time. I don't drink coffee out of him, I use him to store things, as you can see, and to be just be there.

This is a cheap picture my son bought me for a birthday from a dollar store when he was about 8. It's the first present he ever gave me that he paid for. It's a brutal picture, but I hang it anyway so he can see that I value it, which I do.

For the same reason, but also because of the words on it, I hang the scroll thing labelled "Dad" (on the right) on the wall above my computer screen. It's a gift from my daughter.

The C's are my initials, given to me by a woman I was involved in a relationship with who had also bought herself her own initials. The MYO 244 is a vehicle licence plate I found in Bangalore and brought home from India in 1979.

The mask on the left is something I bought in Spain in 1992, I just love all the colours in it.

The huge snake-charmer painting on the right I bought in India, also in 1979, for my mom.

She knew how much I loved it; she gave it back to me several years later.

These things will hang on whatever walls protect me, forever.

And to the left here is a treasure trove of stuff that never leaves the top of my TV/sound system wall unit.

The clock my mom gave me; the "Beary Special Dad" teddy bear from my daughter; the bottle of Quebec maple syrup from my son.

Other items are there from different people, including an Alaskan bear, a vase, a black puppy dog from women past and present.

And this is only a small sample of the knicks and knacks of my life and my travels and "my stuff" that I keep not in a closet but there for me to see, all the time.

Blogger wouldn't let me download any more pix, so I might have to follow this up with a Part 2 unless I've put all of Blogworld (or at least the few visitors to my little part of the planet) to sleep by now.

And if I haven't done that, I'll say this: I've opened up a bit of my life to you...now what are some of the things you hold dear, knick-knacks, gifts you've received, keepsakes, etc., that adorn your home?

Things you want to have around you to remind you of this thought or that person or that time or that relationship...or whatever?

  5. very cool post... and your comment space isn't big enough for all the stuff that fills my home! the biggest shelf fillers slash dust collectors are the dragons in my collection. i must have about 40 of them all over my house and one in my car- including jewellery, a calendar, books and pictures. the second lot of things that cover all the other available spaces are books! and then of course, there are pictures of damien everywhere!
oh, and i must mention my lavalamp- it's purple fluid with yellow wax and its one of my favourite things in the world (given to me by someone i fell deeply in love with) and i have a fluffy cow that laughs hysterically and vibrates when you squeeze its one hoof (given to me for my 30th birthday by sister b).

  7. Keshi:

To me it's like walking through my own picture album every day...I might not think about any of those items individually, but just knowing they're there...

    MJ:

Keshi or whatever other sexy maid service I'm using that month.

    Hodedoo:

    Finally decided to visit, huh?

I wonder whether all those worms you downed in a drunken stupor from those tequila bottles at Donn and Ally's Fiesta parties have been digested, or if they're still crawling around somewhere inside you...

Don't hold that garage sale too soon now...the big trend is your kids living with you (off you) until they're 30.

    Ces:

Thanks, you. But that stuff only scratches the surface of my memorabilia...let's see some of yours.

    Angel:

Homo Escapeons has one of those lava lamps...geez, I might have even bought it for him, can't remember (although I had not fallen deeply in love with him, just his wife).

Dragons are cool creatures, as you and your avatar display. I think tho we need to see a pic of your fluffy cow...

    Anna:

You will always have an invite into my home.

  8. dang, I thought I was a pack rat!

All I got is a ton of highschool love notes and photos...and every single last article of clothing that my four children have worn since birth.

Their school work doesn't count for hoarding because I am betting one day it will be priceless...if only to me!

  9. ww, you really are a sweet guy. sentimental. you're lucky because that also works to your benefit with women!

you've got me thinking about the "things" that matter to me. my grandmother clock. the neon clock. the robert cardinal painting. ces' painting. willa's stone. rosie's calendar. hmmmm. if the holidays don't do me in, i'll try to take a few pix for you.

  10. I have always ben impressed with your collection of real artwork...you are mr momento.

I have boxes and boxes of everything that my kids ever even scribbled to me...I suppose that I should collage it or do something with it. All the little arts and crafts are scattered about and now the Ridman is dragging home more stuff...plus my goodladywife is a complete packrat..
    we are doomed!

    HA word verification is TDHUM..HA!

  11. Awaiting:

I can see how those love notes would pile up...but no fricknfrack kinda stuff?

That's fantastic about holding on to the clothing for your kids...

    KJ:

Ya gotta have some stuff that anchors you to your life, I figure, and some of this is it.

Glad to hear you spout off some of your stuff. I'm curious about Willa's stone and Rosie's calendar.

Would love to see some pix.

    HE:

Yeah, with all that stuff, you are doomed...to having it all around to remember great memories.

    A collage would be fantastic.

  14. ww--my best friend willa died 18 months ago and on my desk is her purple crystal stone. i hold it and talk to her sometimes.

my dog rosie, by some unplanned moment of fate, along with her friend bartholomew pepperspots, became the cover and ms. october for the 'great dogs' calendar of 1994. i walked into a barnes and noble bookstore and there was rosie sincerely posing in all her glossy glory. we lost her now 3 years ago and i still tear up every time i talk about how special she was. she is waiting for me.

gee, i'm using your blog for a long essay. forgive me, ww. or further encourage me!
