The Olympics in Winnipeg

I was sutprised, on the night the Olympics opened, to see this...
It was from across the Red River from me, at The Forksand at our baseball park, home of the Northern League's Winnipeg Goldeyes, which I covered once or twice. It was fire works in Winnipeg, honouring the start of the Games, I assume.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

And Happy Valentines to My Loved One!

Another sport death

I covered Winter Olympic in Calgary 1988 and Salt Lake City in I think it was 2004 or so. It is tragic, obviously, the death of the Russian luger. At that speed, he would barely have known what hit him. Seriously. Try watching it.
I think THIS (below) is a pic of him. Apologies if it isn't.

If I'm NOT mistaken, he comes from the same state in Russia (Georgia) that a Russian diver who also died in competition did. He also died in Canada, competing at the World University Games in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1983.

We know it had to happen some time. I was covering the diving competition then, when Amerivan Greg Louganis won. It still seems so surreal.

NIKKO

This is Nikko, my younger brother Gerry's now dead dog. He was a Husky.
This is Darren, my brother-in-law, one of the most cool & relaxed guys I know. That's good, because his wife, my sister Lisa, is basically insane. No, not really.
Above & below are just pix -- from BEFORE I had my stroke. That's my mother Louise in the pic below with me.
This is one of the offspring Ken & Shauna's dog had a few years back. As far as we know, she was eaten by wolves. The mom, that is.

Just some more goofy pix of my son Evan...
I'll be doing this (above) over the next few weeks as people whine about why Canada doesn't do better at the Winter Olympics.

But we SHOULD do OK with this.
And this...

That's hockey player Jennifer Botterill of Winnipeg, above, and speed-skater Cindy Klassen of Winnipeg, who I covered as a cyclist at the Canada Summer Games in New Bruswick in 2000, below.

Below is biathlete Meghan Imrie of Falcon Lake, Manitoba, and below that is womens' hockey star of Canada Hayley Wickenheiser, whom I know well.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
